Information about Venice
Venice is a city that feels suspended between dream and reality. With its canals instead of streets and gondolas gliding across the water, Venice offers a timeless charm. Built on over 100 islands connected by bridges and alleyways, Venice is a treasure trove of art, history and traditions that has fascinated travelers for centuries.
Walking through Venice, you’ll encounter artisan workshops, magnificent historic squares and breathtaking views of the lagoon. Don’t miss the city’s most iconic landmarks, such as St. Mark’s Square and its golden basilica, the majestic Doge’s Palace, and the romantic Bridge of Sighs.
Venice is also known for its authentic traditions. Try cicchetti (Venetian tapas) in historic wine bars, or plan a day trip to Murano to witness the ancient art of glassblowing.
Explore more of the Venetian Lagoon, such as Burano, famous for its colorful houses, and Torcello, known for its Venetian-Byzantine mosaics. If you visit in September, head to the Lido, home to the renowned Venice Film Festival.
Venice is magical in every season. In spring and summer, the city comes alive with events like the Venice Biennale, while in winter, the Venice Carnival transforms the city into a spectacular open-air stage.

The port of Venice is located between Tronchetto Island and Piazzale Roma. Piazzale Roma is the main entry point to the city and the only one accessible by car. Since the port has several terminals, your boarding area will depend on your ferry operator and route.
The nearest bus stop to the port is Piazzale Roma. From there, take the elevated shuttle train (People Mover) to the passenger terminal. If you decide instead to arrive in Venice by car, keep in mind that there are no driveable roads in the city, so you will have to leave your vehicle in one of the paid parking lots in Piazzale Roma. Useful info: motorcycles and bicycles are not allowed in Venice’s historic center or on other islands in the lagoon, so local ferries do not offer vehicle transport services.
The best way to explore Venice is on foot, but several transport options are available. St. Mark’s Square can be reached on foot within 30-min from the train station. On the mainland (i.e., the non-lagoon part of Venice), buses and trams operate. In the lagoon, public transport is provided by vaporettos (water buses), which connect Venice to nearby islands.
Additionally, Consorzio Vidali Group operates ferries within the Venetian Lagoon year-round. These ferries depart from Venice San Marco, usually stopping at Murano before continuing to Burano. Water taxis are also available but are more expensive.
Locals often travel by so-called "gondola ferries" (traghetti gondola), which allow them to cross the Grand Canal, but they only operate during specific hours.
Since cars, motorcycles and bicycles are prohibited in Venice’s historic center, travelers arriving by car must park at Piazzale Roma, the furthest point accessible by vehicle.
And of course, a gondola ride is a must! While expensive, it’s a unique experience that truly captures the magic of Venice.
