Summer weekend getaway in Poros
…for the most delicious lemon ice cream!
Are you asking yourself why to choose Poros? Easy! Poros is the greenest island of the Saronic Gulf with stunning two-story neoclassical buildings, cobbled alleys and mesmerizing beaches, ideal for a day trip or a weekend getaway (AND only 1 hour away from Piraeus). So, are you in or out? Ferryhopper bets you are in!

A day trip to the island of lemon
As soon as the ferry anchors in the port of Poros, you will see the whitewashed houses decorated with bougainvillea and jasmine hanging on a verdant hill. A little further on, you will meet the charming mermaid (made by the sculptor Giannis Xenakis), who has been welcoming visitors to the island since 1999.
At first glance, the island of Poros resembles a watercolor painting with its picturesque port and neoclassical buildings. Drop your bags, go on a walk through the island’s cobblestone alleys and try the best lemon ice cream made from the juicy fruits of the renowned Lemon Forest.
If you are more into coffee and chill mode with stunning views of the Saronic Gulf, head towards the traditional cafes around Karamanou Square! After regaining strength (you will need it😛), follow the narrow streets that lead you to the famous (and totally instagrammable) Tower Clock of Poros.
Going up to Kasteli, you will also see the house of Ioannis Kapodistrias (the first head of state of independent Greece). The impressive Clock Tower in the colors of the Greek flag awaits you at the top of the hill. It is definitely a very welcoming clock that offers you a 360° view of Galatas and the deep blue shores of the Peloponnese.

The perfect weekend escape in Poros
Two is one and one is none? Then, embark your car on the ferry from Piraeus and enjoy a carefree weekend in Poros. After tasting the delicious lemon ice cream and strolling parallel to the port, start the engine to unravel the ancient secrets of Poros.
Head towards the island’s heart and pass through the breathtaking lush landscape. It will lead you straight to the Sanctuary of Poseidon, in the remains of a magnificent temple made of blue limestone.
Since we are talking about wonderful places in Poros, your next stop is the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi (the life-giving spring). The monastery stands on a hill surrounded by pine trees, while down the slope, you can swim in the crystal clear waters of the homonymous beach.
On the same side of the island, you will also find the remains of the Russian Naval Station! Russians chose to build their naval base in the well-sheltered harbor of Poros back in 1834. Nowadays, the Russian Naval Dockyard is considered a historical monument and it’s just a stone’s throw from the sandy beach, so you can also take a dip! 😃
Tip: take the boat to explore the small island of Daskalio just across from the Russian Naval Station! It is a heart-shaped island, also known as “the island of love”.
