Payments, Data Privacy & Safety

Find answers to all your questions concerning payment options and safety, as well as personal data privacy on our website, when booking your ferry tickets.

How can I pay?

July 5, 2024

Ferryhopper accepts most major credit and debit cards: Maestro, Mastercard, VISA, and Visa Electron, as well as Masterpass payments through the National Bank of Greece, Eurobank, and the payment institution “EveryPay”. At the moment, we do not accept American Express or PayPal payments, but we are planning to include them in our payment methods soon.

Why do you need my personal data when issuing a ferry ticket?

March 1, 2023

Ferry tickets are personal. Therefore, in order to issue a ticket, we are required to provide some personal details to the ferry companies (e.g. your name, surname, gender, date of birth, and nationality). Regarding gender, the ferry companies’ booking systems offer a choice between male and female only. This means that we are, unfortunately, not able to include other options. In order to book your tickets, especially when it comes to international ferry routes, you will probably also be required to provide your ID or passport number.

Furthermore, you will be asked to provide a valid phone number, so that ferry companies can reach you in case of a last-minute change to your trip. Your email address is used by Ferryhopper to send the booking confirmation email, which includes all the necessary information for your ferry journey. We will also notify you via email if there are any changes to your trip or if there is anything you need to do regarding your trip. Finally, you can choose to receive our newsletter as well as information on special offers.

We take your privacy very seriously. We are committed to protecting your personal data and we will not use or share it with anyone, except as described in our privacy policy.

Why won’t my credit / debit card payment go through?

May 26, 2022

On very rare occasions, a customer's payment may be declined by our bank. The reason for this is usually one of the following:

  • The card details you entered are incorrect
  • There are insufficient funds in your account
  • There is a temporary problem with the connection between your bank and ours

If your payment fails, we suggest that you try again. Please make sure that you enter your card details correctly. If the issue is not resolved, contact your bank right away and they should be able to give you more information on why your payment was declined. If you think that our bank is responsible for the problem, please send us an email and we will contact them and try to resolve the issue.

In some cases, you may be asked to enter a 3D Secure Code. 3D Secure is a security protocol used by most banks worldwide. It is an additional security layer that we have added in order to protect you from unauthorized transactions. If you encounter a problem with your payment when asked to enter the 3D Secure Code, you should request a code from your bank. If you are still having trouble with your payment, please do not hesitate to contact us directly and we will be happy to help!

If your card has been issued by a US or Canadian bank (e.g. Capital One), you may need to contact the bank and request that they authorize international transactions (including transactions to Greece).

In what currency am I charged?

May 26, 2022

The currency used for all transactions on Ferryhopper is the euro (€). The transaction exchange rate is determined by your card provider at the time of the transaction. Please note that your bank may use its own interbank exchange rates and charge foreign currency transaction fees and / or other service fees. These charges are not included in the total price you see on our website.

Are my credit / debit card details safe on Ferryhopper?

The safety of your personal data is of utmost importance to us. In order to ensure that your card details are as safe as possible, we always redirect you to the secure payment page of the bank we collaborate with to complete your payment. Your card details are safely transferred directly to the bank’s servers using SSL 2048-bit encryption, which ensures a secure connection.
